SC Nexus for Advanced Resilient Energy

Advancing Resilient Energy

About SC Nexus for Advanced Resilient Energy

The SC Nexus for Advanced Resilient Energy (SC Nexus), led by the South Carolina Department of Commerce, aims to be a global leader in advanced energy, with a focus on cyber-secure grid resilience technologies (GRT) and improving the clean energy supply chain. This Tech Hub will leverage the region’s manufacturing base, research capabilities, and public-private collaboration to innovate and commercialize emerging energy storage materials and manufacturing techniques, including a demonstrative microgrid implementation that integrates renewable energy and storage into the state’s electricity systems. This Tech Hub will also expand opportunities for developing, testing, and deploying exportable electricity technologies regionally. In doing so, SC Nexus will contribute to economic and national security by expanding the availability of GRTs and enabling greater deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) that will fortify energy supplies, promote decarbonization, and reduce grid disruptions.

Problem statement

The SC Nexus for Advanced Resilient Energy (SC Nexus), led by the South Carolina Department of Commerce, aims to advance cyber-secure grid resilience technologies (GRT) and improve the clean energy supply chain. Despite the region’s strong manufacturing base and research capabilities, significant barriers exist in testing and commercializing advanced energy technologies like battery energy storage systems (BESS). With a $45 million grant received in July 2024, SC Nexus will expand pilot manufacturing for BESS, upgrade a grid testing facility, develop a multi-modal grid operations center, and raise awareness and training for GRT careers. Additionally, SC Nexus focuses on improving power reliability and providing skills training and support services in underserved counties, contributing to economic and national security, promoting decarbonization, reducing grid disruptions, and extending project benefits across the region.

Traction information

- $75M in EDA funds, $11.2 million in partner matches, and $76 million in partner investments will be mobilized to establish SC Nexus as a global leader in cyber-secure grid resilience technologies (GRTs).
- 28,000 jobs are expected to be supported and over $5.7 billion in additional economic output generated throughout the region by 2034, focusing on battery (BESS) and hydrogen energy storage systems (HESS).
- $10B of the $752 billion global market opportunity in targeted technologies, projected to grow at an annualized rate of 15% by 2030, is aimed to be captured by SC Nexus.
